Ceiling fans with efficient DC technology

If you attach great value to energy-conserving ventilation and ecologically justifiable lighting, you will be thrilled by a direct current ceiling fan. The cooling in summer and heat recovery in the winter are provided while using as little as 3 Watts. On high speed these units usually consume about 30 W. Depending on the used bulb, a few Watts are added when switching on the integrated (LED) light kit.

Basic technical information

In regards to economical and energy-saving operation a ceiling fan with a direct current motor as a perfect alternative to fans that depend on a conventional alternate current.

The operating voltage of the DC electric motor is 24 Volt in case of most ECO units. In order to allow use with a 230 Volt mains supply most fans are equipped with an integrated voltage transformer that reduces the 230 Volt AC power to the required 24 Volt DC. The transformation is done either with a transformer and a subsequent rectification or in a fully electronic manner. If the device is designed for use with 24 Volt mains supply, the corresponding voltage transformation needs to be provided on-site. That way it is possible to install one central and sufficient transformer to supply an entire series of 24 Volt ceiling fans – a very efficient method of ventilating large spaces.
Furthermore we would like to note that that DC fans with 24 Volt are suitable for direct connection to solar and photovoltaic systems - give that the system is designed for the same voltage.

Benefits of energy-saving fans

Energy conservation is the main focus when it comes to these fans. In comparison to classic alternating current fans ECO fans require about 50-60 percent less power. Conventional ceiling fans with AC motor consume an average of 50 to 70 Watt on high speed, depending on the model this value is even higher. The power consumption of DC motor is 20 to 30 W, even though they reach the same speed levels. Another benefit of DC fans is the whisper quiet and smooth operating. There is no aubible motor noise.

An AC motor might have a lower power consumption than an air conditioning system, environmentally conscious users are always looking to optimise consumption and utility bills. Energy-saving fans offer the same performance with “better“ conditions:

DC energy-saving motor

  • Low energy consumption starting at 3 W
  • Often suitable for LED lamps
  • Some models with light dimmer or colour change
  • Remote control is usually included
  • Contemporary design
  • Smooth operation, no noise
  • Sometimes eqipped with slow motion feature
  • Used with 50 and 60 Hertz power lines

Most fans come with an optional reversing feature that determines the running direction of the motor, also called summer and winter mode. This saves even further unnecessary heating costs. The principle of heat recovery is explained easily. Warm indoor air is lighter than unheated air. It rises towards the ceiling and accumulates there. However, up there the warmth is useless, because residents need the warmth at floor level. Instead of continuously feeding the fireplace or turning up the radiator, a ceiling fan on low speed is able break up these layers of heat. The warm air spreads throughout the room until a thermodynamic exchange has taken place. Farewell cold feet! By using various extension drop rods and according cable extensions our DC fans can be adapted to any room height.

Which DC ceiling fan is the right one?

When purchasing a fan the decision should be made in consideration of size, lighting and design as well as application area or environmental factors. The differences between DC fans of various brands usually come up to just a few Watts. Some models begin with 3 Watts, others with 6 or 16 W. Depending on the model the maximum consumption is rated between 23 and 37 W. Add-on light kits also make a small difference (see details about the used lamps).

Example: The Eco Genuino ceiling fan with a 152cm (60“) size requires a maximum of 14 Watts, whereas the 180cm (72“) uses 30 W at most.

In respect of power consumption you can make your choice by estimating how the new fan is going to be used. If possible, answer the following question:

Do you plan to run the ceiling fan on high speed, e.g. on the top floor where it gets very hot? In that case the Big Smooth Eco ceiling fan might be your best choice, it only uses 29 Watts on full speed.
Or will the new ceiling fan operate in the bedroom where it shall move on low speed during the night? In that case we recommend a model with a low energy consumption of a few Watts and dimmable lighting, such as the Pepeo Raja. How many hours per day will you use the electric light? Is the fan intended for use in the office or workspace where it completely replaces the ceiling light? Would you like to use the fan as a visual enhancement of the interior where it runs in slow motion, for example in foyers and restaurants?
These questions about intended use and place of application can help to set the right priorities when it comes to your new DC fan.

You want to save energy in style and have a weakness for unusual design? No problem at all, as you can see in our shop energy-saving models are anything but plain and boring. A few highlights we want to introduce are the ceiling fans Link, eFan and Eco Helix:

There also energy-saving DC ceiling fans with special protection ratings against water and dust ingress for outdoor areas. They can also be applied in damp indoor rooms like the bathroom. The suitability for use in kitchens must be explicitely stated in the instruction manual, as greasy particles in the air can damage the motor (direct and alternating current). The close proximity to the stove is another important factor.

Summary

Direct current fans go easy on the environment and your additional expenses. There are two reasons why. One one hand, there is the economic power consumption starting at 3 Watt. On the other hand, there are models with integrated LEDs or the optoin to use energy-saving bulbs. On average DC motors (excluding the light) consume about 30 W. Conventional alternating current AC motors require twice as much power for the same performance.

Defining ourselves as a “green“ company, we highly recommend low energy models. They are available in all shapes and sizes and fit every budget. A remote control is usually already included in the delivery. Outdoor fans and units for damp rooms are available as an ECO version.
