Window fans, subtle integration in glass panes

Finding a way to ensure sufficient ventilation is often a topic that is left ignored. There are various reasons for this: Sometimes the importance of air circulation is underestimated, in some cases traffic noise or the fear of burglaries are the decisive factor. However, a deficit of air change leads to stuffy indoor air and finally results in mould growth. Fans for window installation are a great alternative: quick set-up, automated operation, efficient in old and new buildings.

Application of window fans

Apart from regulating humidity and the indoor climate, extracting smells and tobacco smoke is also part of a controlled ventilation. Particularly in all premises that are generally rather damp and do not experience sufficient ventilation, for instance because an open window would mean being exposed to traffic noise, the use of a window fan is recommended. It requires little effort to install and therefore can be integrated in all areas of everyday and business life. We offer the ideal fan for every type of window or a corresponding conversion kit.

Possible applications for window fans

  • At home, particularly in damp rooms (WC, bathroom, kitchen, utility room, cellar)
  • Hotel and catering industry
  • Office, study
  • Darkroom, hobby rooms sensitive to draught
  • Greenhouse, conservatory
  • Gym
  • Thin panels and walls
  • Controlled ventilation
  • Protection from burglaries and noise

Many people, many flavours – please let in some fresh air!

Reference to supply air: The same amount of air must be supplied as it is extracted to ensure that the pressure inside the room is kept in balance. There are fans that can be reversed from extract to supply air mode, meaning the airflow is redirected from out to in. Louvres in doors or windows are another option for supplying fresh air without reversible fans.

The air volume a fan needs to move for a sufficient air change depends on the humidity in and size of the room. Calculate the required air changes per hour.

Pros and cons of installation on glass (instead of inline, wall and duct models)

The airflow and good manufacture of fans designed for installation in walls, windows, ducts or shafts all show great results. Yet, window fans have one key advantage: They can be fitted in old and new buildings and do not require existing ventilation shafts. That means they are ideal for all premises with a glass front or thin walls. Most models are constructed with an axial design, meaning they do not take up much space. Suitable accessories also offer you the possibility to install them in sloping skylights or double-glazed windows.

Benefits of window fans at a glance (equipment varies)

  • Little space requirements
  • No modifications on the masonry
  • No pipes, ducts or wall breakthrough are necessary
  • Reasonable installation costs, quick setting up
  • Suitable for many glass types
  • Splashing water protection for use in bathroom, conservatory, etc.
  • Individual control, supervised ventilation
  • Automated ventilation intervals, adjustable after-running controllers
  • Link-up to toilet flush, ceiling light, movement, etc.
  • Sensors for smoke, humidity and room temperature
  • Some devices regulate supply and exhaust air (reversible)
  • Controlled with wall controller, remote control or pull switch
  • Versatile sizes and designs, subtle colour finish
  • Little demand for cleaning
  • Reliable air tightness when devices are turned off, no draught
  • Quiet, consistent operation; can also be used in studies
  • Filter keeps off pollutants in the supply air

Internal rooms, meaning rooms without windows, pose an exception. However, some of our listed window models can be mounted to walls as well, others have special mounting kits that allows them to be built into a wall or an already existing ventilation duct.

Drawbacks of installation in a window

  • No installation in rooms without windows
  • Landlord might forbid installation
  • No heat recovery

Clear flat laminates or acrylic glass can be prepared with a jigsaw at home. If the fan needs to be fitted into a genuine glass, please contact a professional glazier or window fitter. Usually, the existing pane is replaced by a new pane with a corresponding opening for the ventilator.

The required electrical connection set up by an electrician.

Our tip: Check whether the window fan is compatible with your blinds and shutters before placing the order, you might have to switch to a flatter model. We also offer devices that can be mounted in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal position.

Despite the recent trend: DIY is not always the best option.

Controls and accessories: all from one source

Depending on the integrated equipment window fans are controlled manually or with motion, temperature, humidity or smoke detectors. The automated models begin operating as soon as someone enters the bathroom for example, once a certain humidity level or temperature is reached, or when the toilet flush or light switch is used. If required it is also possible to program an adjustable after-running time in this selected room.

A self-regulating model is particularly recommendable in catering and hotel industry, as they can react to smoke of burnt food, for instance. In spacious rooms like cafeterias it is possible to control several, even different window fans with the same speed controller.

Other extras include mounting kits in various sizes for glass panes with bigger thickness and different pane types. Furthermore, we offer airtight external covers with grilles that keep away large pollutants such as leaves. Those covers automatically close once the fan is turned off. This prevents cold air from infiltrating. A corresponding filter holds back smaller particles like dust and dirt if you set a reversible fan to supply air mode.
